America: A Nation of Progress

A juxtaposition of the old and the new in the American City

The idea is to focus on the decay of history in cities. I want to capture how pieces of an area are still standing but are not in the shape they used to be or should be in. That’s what you see all the time when going somewhere, the old structure that’s crumbling while it’s surrounded by shiny and new things. I first had the idea when I saw an old brick crosswalk showing underneath the asphalt on Bannister st. in Kingston. It was barely there but represented something that has been hidden or pushed over by advancement. For the project I had attempted to get shots of buildings, structures, anything I can find in that area. I wanted that juxtaposition of the old and the new. I tried to plan my presentation in a way that was an eventual decline. From buildings that stand well and are simply compared to newer developments then to a point that there’s nothing left beside remnants of what used to be there. The project idea was extremely fun for me to do as it combined my love of photography with my love of cities.
